Portugal, Sardines, the Euro and Joana Vasconcelos in Paris…
June celebrates summer, popular festivities, hot temperatures, summer music festivals, sea escapes and more. Anywhere in south, center or north of Portugal, you will not only feel the smell but taste the flavor of sardines, the freshness of basil and the appeal of a well disposed foot of dance.
Collective celebration does not end here, after popular festivities and knowing who played the Euro’s final, there is a place in this commentary to highlight the artist that everyone spoke about this June: Joana Vasconcelos, who was celebrated for being the first woman ever to exhibit in Versailles, Paris.
The work of this well acclaimed artist is often an allusion to portuguese folk as craft traditions, this mix of popular and erudition, tradition and contemporary is our month highlight as our suggestions to our readers, of what is also Portugal.
Simultaneously with the exhibition happening in Paris, artist work can be seen this weekend in S. Pedro da Afurada Procession, in Vila Nova de Gaia. Joana Vasconcelos has collaborated with the decor of this year’s procession litter. Rede is the artist installation work.
This event is part of Vila Nova de Gaia traditional festivities, included in the North Festival – taking place in Vila Nova de Gaia (30th June/ 1st July), Viana do Castelo ( 27 a 29th July) and Braga (8th September).
