On what would have been Nobel laureate José Saramago‘s 89th birthday, the building that will house the Saramago Foundationwill be handed over to its president, the late writer’s wife Pilar del Río, in a “simple and solemn” ceremony, according to the organisation. It was also announced that the Foundation’s opening to the greater public will take place in the spring of 2012.

The symbolic handout of the keys of the Casa dos Bicos, an iconic 16th century building with its façade covered with diamond-shaped spikes that faces the Tagus river, in central Lisbon, which is to house the Saramago Foundation, is to occur Wednesday by the Mayor of Lisbon António Costa. The Maestro Lopes-Graça Choir will perform a recital of poetry by Portuguese authors followed by some of the late Lopes-Graça’s music compositions.

António Costa will preside over the closing ceremony, in which “some words by José Saramago about the donation of the Casa dos Bicos will be read”- an honour Saramago considered greater than receiving the Nobel prize for literature.
